We have proved here that, mips as a solid phase extraction materials offer important and practical advantages with respect to other solid phase extraction methodologies. Calibration studies were performed using the mip-spme to quantitate the concentration of caffeine in teas and coffees. This may be especially useful in forensic applications where sample sizes may be small and composition may be complex.

All samples were analyzed using gas chromatography mass spectrometry. The commercially available c-18 cartridges were able to recover only about 52 of aflatoxin-b 1 at concentrations of 2 ppb when compared with almost complete recovery by the mip. Since mips created using traditional methods were unable to differentiate between creatine and creatinine, a new approach to the rational design of a mip selective for creatinine was developed using computer simulation.

To enhance extraction efficiency in spe and spme, molecularly imprinted polymers (mips), which are designer polymers, can be more selective for the binding of an analyte or group of analytes that are similarly structured. The monomers giving the highest binding score were further tested using simulated annealing in order to mimic the complexation of the functional monomers with template in the monomer mixture. In some forensic disciplines various methods of extraction are used to perform analysis.

This method was demonstrated for the detection of creatine using creatine-imprinted mips. Mip-spme fibers were also prepared with 2,4-dinitrotoluene and deuterated 2,6-dinitrotoluene. The result of this simulation gave an optimised mip composition.

Sensors for creatine and creatinine have been reported using a novel method of rational design of molecularly imprinted polymers (mips), and solid phase extraction of aflatoxin-b 1 has also been described in the thesis. Among these methods, solid phase extraction (spe) and solid phase microextraction (spme) are used in fields such as toxicology and explosives analysis. Using different solvents in the extraction procedure changed the extraction performance efficiency of the mips due to the change in solvent polarity. In this work, mip solid phase microextraction fibers (mip-spme) were fabricated and caffeine was selectively sampled in the presence of theophylline and theobromine. Less selectivity was obtained for extraction of 2,4-dnt and 2,6-dnt in the presence of other dnt isomers.
